Jazz standards by Steve Tyrell anything but standard

Release Date: Mar 01, 2010   Author: Cathy Weiss

WICKENBURG, AZ -

The Grammy Award-winning vocalist, producer and composer, Steve Tyrell, will appear with his band for one night only at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 12 at 7:30PM.

Steve Tyrell reinvented classic pop standards for a modern-day audience with the grit and soul of a lifetime of experiences. Tyrell was born and raised in Texas, cutting his teeth in local R&B bands before relocating to New York at age 18 and landing a staff position at Scepter Records. As the labels head of A&R and promotion, Tyrell championed the classic Burt Bacharach/Hal David-composed recordings of Dionne Warwick and also recruited singer B.J. Thomas, producing his hits "Hooked on a Feeling" and "Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head."

Tyrells own songs have been recorded by such revered artists as Ray Charles, Diana Ross, LL Cool J and Elvis Presley. His song, “How Do You Talk To An Angel,” written and produced for Aaron Spellings Fox television series “The Heights,” was a No. 1 pop hit in 1992 and earned Tyrell one of his two Emmy nominations.

With his trademark sexy, raspy voice he returned to performing in 1991, singing "The Way You Look Tonight" on the soundtrack to Father of the Bride, and began recording a series of seven American Standards albums; his latest “Back to Bacharach” was released in 2008. All seven of the albums achieved top 5 status on Billboards jazz charts and his first album “A New Standard” was among the best selling jazz albums for over 5 years.

The concert at the Webb Center is sure to include “Fly Me to The Moon,” “All of Me” and “What the World Needs Now.”

Tickets are on sale through the Webb Center Box Office, 684-6624 or on-line at www.delewebbcenter.org.
